Lovely Wajima lacquer 輪島塗 tea caddy 棗 (natsume) with a refined continuous landscape design. It showcases a prominent weeping willow 柳 (yanagi) by a riverbend, adjacent to a waterwheel 水車 (suisha) and a quaint low fence, surrounded by high waves. Executed in different shades of golden hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) and takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer design) on a glossy black lacquer ground 蝋色漆 (rôiro’urushi). The interior coated with even black lacquer as well and finished with golden fundame rims 粉溜地 (matt lacquer). Included is the original wooden tomobako 供箱 (storage box), bearing the signature and seal of the artist Yôsai Okamoto 岡本陽斎 (born 1932). Yôsai Okamoto, a Kyoto-born lacquer artist with a studio in Yamanaka, Kaga (Ishikawa prefecture), specializes in Wajima lacquer. His work primarily focuses on tea ceremony utensils, often featuring motifs of flowers, cranes, and other traditional patterns. He is renowned for his well-balanced spatial compositions in his creations. Period: Japan – Second half Shôwa period (1950-1989). Dimensions: Height 6.8 cm, Diameter 6.8 cm.
