Ecorce battue Butsi - Pygmées Ituri - Congo - Toile - Central Africa. Objet de collection


Ces magnifiques objets sont réalisés avec de l'écorce d'arbre, plus précisément la substance fibreuse contenue sous la couche superficielle la plus dure du tronc (Liber). Ces fibres d'écorce sont battues jusqu'à les rendre fines et souples. Si ce sont les femmes Pygmées des forêts de l'Ituri qui déterminent l'arbre dont sera prise l'écorce, ce sont les hommes qui vont la battre et la préparer à l'aide de maillets. Des motifs symboliques sont ensuite peints par les femmes, avec du charbon de bois mélangé à du latex. Le produit fini est appelé murumba, pongo ou lengbe. Le recours à plusieurs essences d'arbre, notamment des ficus, explique les couleurs allant du blanc à l'orangé en passant par le brun. C'est un art très abouti comme le souligne J. Cornet. Portées ou utilisées dans le cadre de cérémonies rituelles ces oeuvres sont les supports dune nécessité spirituelle. Ces tissus ne sont pas très fragiles et peuvent se repasser légèrement en les humidifiant avec une pattemouille
