His Master’s Voice: ‘Nipper’ - Verenigd Koningrijk - ca. 1960

Iconisch beeld van de iconische Terriër Nipper, ook bekend als de RCA Victor dog. De hond is bekend van het het wereldberoemde Britse platenlabel His Master’s Voice (HMV). Noppes stond in de 19e eeuw (1898-1899) model voor een schilderij van de Britse schilder Francis Barraud. Dit schilderij heeft later de naam ‘His Master Voice’ gekregen van het het platenlabel His Master’s Voice, met Nipper als logo. Nipper is vormgegeven in de kleur crème en met een roze halsbandje.

Nipper op het schilderij heeft echt bestaan. Het diertje luisterde naar de naam Nipper en werd vereeuwigd door kunstschilder Francis Barraud. De hond was van zijn broer Mark. Die had het dier in 1884 gevonden in Bristol. Naar verluidt gaf hij het dier de naam Nipper omdat de hond de gewoonte had om in achterbenen van zijn bezoekers te happen (‘nippen’). Tijdens bezoekjes van Mark aan zijn broer, bleek Nipper zeer gefascineerd door een fonograaf in diens woning. Met dit apparaat kon met behulp van wasrollen muziek afgespeeld worden. Nipper zat vaak voor de hoorn van de fonograaf en leek zich af te vragen waar de afgespeelde muziek nou eigenlijk vandaan kwam. Barraud vond dit een aardig tafereeltje en besloot de hond in 1898 naast een fonograaf op doek te vereeuwigen. Hij moest het beeld van Nipper wel opdiepen uit zijn herinneringen want het dier was drie jaar daarvoor overleden. Ook zijn broer leefde inmiddels niet meer. Later is de fonograaf aangepast naar een grammofoon.
