Utagawa Yoshitora, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was active in the late 19th century (from the Bakumatsu to early Meiji periods). He was skilled in warrior prints, large head actor portraits, and depicted beauties, prints of Yokohama, and prints of modernization. In 1849 (Kaei 2), he was penalized for satirizing Tokugawa Ieyasu, but by 1868 (Meiji 1), he had been ranked second in a nishiki-e artist competition.
