Box (2) - Lacquered wood - Two Hokai storage boxes

A pair of lovely black lacquer circular wooden hokai 外居 (covered shell container). The removable cover is decorated with a gold lacquer mon 紋 (crest) depicting three oak leaves 柏 (kashiwa) in a circle. The mon is surrounded by golden scrolling foliage and clouds. The sides are decorated with a continuous swirling foliage motive. These hokai are of typical form, with ribbed sides, supported on four tall spreading feet, decorated overall with a black lacquer 蝋色漆 (rôiro’urushi) detailed with golden nashiji 梨子地, and the edges and feet with shaped copper fittings decorated with a flower and circle motive in low relief. It has a black lacquer interior and white cord ties and tassels (cords are in a worn condition). In good original condition with some signs of age and wear. Please see the photos for a condition reference. Height 43 cm, Diameter Ø 38.5 cm. Bakumatsu period (1853-1867) Hokai boxes are traditionally used in Japan to store and carry shells for Kai-awase game in Edo and Meiji Period.
