Byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) - Gold leaf, Lacquered wood, Silk - Japan - Late Edo period (First half 19th century)

Remarkable, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) features a painting with a rarely depicted lively scene of sparrows 雀 (suzume) fluttering energetically above paddy fields The birds are drawn to traditional bundles of rice left to dry—a key interest for the large gatherings of sparrows. Unbeknownst to them, they perch on an ingenious device known as naruko 鳴子. These scare devices, when activated, cause bamboo segments to rattle against wood, effectively startling the birds away. The surrounding landscape is adorned with blooming pink and white rose mallows 芙蓉 (fuyô) and soft pink lespedeza 萩 (hagi) on the right, with bamboo 竹 (take) on the left. The fields lie adjacent to a meandering river, their vital water source, which cascades down a small waterfall and continues downstream. This captivating depiction is framed by dense, shimmering gold-leaf clouds. Colour and ink on paper and gold leaf. Mounted two brocade silk borders, a thin brown brocade one. Framed by black lacquered wood with protective hardware with a scrolling foliage design. Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century). Dimensions: Total width: 378.8 cm (2 x 64.6 cm, 4 x 62.4 cm); Height: 171.4 cm. Considering its age it is in a very good condition with traces of age, wear and old restorations. Please look at the restorations on the left panel near the hinges. For a clear condition reference, please refer to the photos as well. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
