Roger Bissière (1886-1964) - Abstracte Compositie

The French painter Roger Bissière is regarded in abstract painting as one of the most important painters of the lyrical abstract style. Initially, he painted even more traditional representations, such as portraits and still lifes. He studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts of Bordeaux. In 1910 he settled in Paris, where he was influenced by the Cubism of Georges Braque. With this artist he became friends and together they worked on the magazine 'L'Esprit Nouveau. He also writes art-critical pieces in several magazines. He also publishes several essays on Georges Pierre Seurat, one of the founders of pointillism, about the realistically working painter Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and about his friend Braque. He is active as an artist and teacher in Paris. In 1920 he has a one-man exhibition at the Paul Rosenberg gallery and participates in the prestigious annual Autumn Salon (Salon d'Automne) in the metropolis. From 1924 to 1937 he had a lot of influence as a teacher, connected to the Académie Ranson. Because of an eye disease, he could not put painting into practice for years. But after 1945 he started painting again. Thanks to a prosperous operation, complete blindness can be prevented. He painted in an abstract and poetic style, with symbols from nature. His work is related to the work of artist Paul Klee and to cultural expressions from Oceania and Africa. At the beginning of his career he achieved international fame. The paintings, with their radiant colours, mainly ochre yellow, green and brown, are somewhat reminiscent of stained glass windows. In 1952 he won the Grand Prix National des Arts. In his last year of life, he is widely recognised when his work is on display at the Venice Biennale. This work was created as an ode to his late wife. Roger Bissière locked himself up for some time after the death of his wife and devoted himself entirely to his work, this is one of the works he has made during this mourning period. These works are considered his opus magnum. In the same year that he produced this work, Bissière also died. Origin: Purchased by the current owner at Kunsthandel Lambert Tegenbosch, original documentation and proof of purchase are included. Tegenbosch bought the work directly from the Pierre Berès gallery in Paris in 1966. Condition: good. Frame: Framed by Monart in 's Hertogenbosch - dark wooden frame with museum glass. Signed: in the lower right. Edition: original.
