De generibus ebriosorum et ebrietate vitanda. Frankfurt: Moenum, 1599.
Octavo: 141 pages (misnumbered as 143). Ex-libris Robert Samuel Turner, some foxing.
In a graceful eighteenth-century red Morocco, using earlier hide (?). All edges blue.
This work was first put together and printed in 1516 by a group of erudite students and scholars at the university of Erfurt. It contains with some poems on drink and drunkenness by Helius Eobanus Hessus Euricius Cordus and others, in which in Latin and German, drunks are compared to animals and sobriety is praised morally and medically. Germany is noted as having the dubious honour of being the most inebriated country on earth!
Next and with continuous pagination and titles, there are Jacob Hartlieb’s De fide meretricum in suos amatores (on loose women) and Paul Olearius’ De fide concubinarum in sacerdotes (railing against priests living with concubines).
An entertaining collection.
