John Philips / John Cunningham - The Poetical Works of John Philips and the Poetical Works of John Cunningham - 1805-1807

Two works bound together. PHILIPS, John (Ed. Thomas Park). The Poetical Works of John Philips. 1807. 114 pages. CUNNINGHAM, John (Ed. Thomas Park). The Poetical Works of John Cunningham. 1805. 160 pages. John Philips (1676 - 1709) born in Brampton, Oxfordshire. Attended Winchester College and Christ Church, Oxford. He was loathe to publish his poetry but after his ‘Splendid Shilling’ poem was included in a collection without his consent, he printed his own folio edition in 1705. It was described by Joseph Addison as the “finest burlesque poem in the English language”. He soon followed with ‘Blenheim’ in the same year and ‘Cyder’ in 1708 as an imitation of Virgil’s Georgics. He died aged 33 of tuberculosis in Hereford. His works have often been compared to Milton. John Cunningham (1729 - 1773) was born in Dublin and lived in Newcastle. His poems often focus on natural scenery and keen observation. One of his most famous poems is ‘Newcastle Beer’.
