William Morris - Gothic Architecture: A Lecture for the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society - 1893

A very RARE little volume from the celebrated William Morris's Kelmscott press, one of the finest private presses in history. Here presented the extremely scarce "Gothic Architecture: A Lecture for the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society". First edition of the author's examination of architecture and its relationship with art, literature, and politics. The entire first edition was printed in public during the Arts and Crafts Exhibition at the New Gallery in London, "under the eyes of an interested and constantly renewed crowd"... It was reprinted twice during the two-month run of the show, which suggests it was popular. It was also the first Kelmscott Press book printed in sextodecimo. This is one of 1,500 copies on paper. The present example has the misprint "Van Eyk" for "Van Eyck" (page 45, line 1) but "gilds" corrected to "guilds" (page 41, line 16). Peterson A18. Original holland-backed boards, front cover lettered in black, edges untrimmed. Title and side-notes printed in red. Text printed in the famous Golden type designed by William Morris himself. Binding lightly rubbed on corners with ancient water signs on boards, inside not affected, rear pastedown with very few "bubbles",contents mostly clean, only very few stains on margins-see photos as part of description. RARITY. Give you the chance to posses one of the most beautiful books printed in fine Presses.
