Master of Gruninger Workshop, Virgil Aeneid - The Trojans Leave Crete for Italy - The Harpies - 1517 - 1517

Palinurus himself was unable to tell night from day in the sky, and could not determine his path among the waves. So for three days, and as many starless nights, we wandered uncertainly, in a dark fog, over the sea. At last, on the fourth day, land was first seen to rise, revealing far off mountains and rolling smoke. The sails fell, we stood to the oars: without pause, the sailors, at full stretch, churned the foam, and swept the blue sea. Fine Post Incunabula woodcut. On full folio leaf. From the Sebastian Brandt edition of Virgil's works, 1502, here from the 1517 edition with the woodcut prepared by the Johann Gruninger workshop with a dark rich tone. Medieval woodcut leaf from the works of Virgil by Sebastian Brandt. This edition is rightly acclaimed for its magnificent series of woodcut illustrations by the anonymous Late Master of the Grüninger Workshop. Good condition. Text to verso.
