A very fine single Western Asiatic Earring, shaped into a shell. The earring is modelled from a thin sheet of gold forming a hollowed convex body, which tapers into a point to form the hook. The surface of the shell body is decorated with horizontal parallel lines worked in the repousse technique. One line runs along the edge framing the parallel strokes decoration. There is a small tear on the side, but otherwise is in good condition.
Jewellery played an important role across many civilisations. Gold necklaces, rings, earrings and bracelets would have been worn in everyday life but also buried with the deceased.
Measurements: Circa L 2.3cm x W 1.8cm
Weight: 2.1 g
Provenance: Provenance: Ex Japanese private collection, deceased, 1970-2010.
