Unknown - Qur'an - Mughal India - 1750

A quality manuscript leaf from a Qur'an originating in Mughal India dating C1750, which is sprinkled with gold and which contains both a Surah in white Thuluth and a marginal Juz. We believe this to be a leaf containing Chapter (53) Sūrat l-najm (The Star), "You are steadfast, so prostate to God and worship; and the Ayah al-Qamar (The Moon) 54:1, where according to a report from Ibn Abbas, Muhammad's cousin, a the people of Makkah requested Muhammad to show a miracle and a lunar eclipse happened thus revealing Quranic verse 54:1. "The Hour is at hand and the moon has been split." The scripture is is plain Muhaqqaq, a popular script for copying the Qur'an, with 5 lines of scripture both above and below the Surat. Simple gold round aya mark the verses, with seven (7) verses in the upper scripture and 3 to the lower scripture. The whole is framed with both a thin and a thick gold linear column, and a blue outer frame line. A Juz marks the change of Surat from the Chapter 53 (The Stars) to Chapter 54 (The Moon). The leaf is mounted and verso it is secured with photographic corner hinges and thin strips of archival repair paper which allow for ease of removals should you wish to remount or frame. Lower right (and best seen in image 3a) there is some ancient repair to the leaf whihc does not detract from its quality. Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing. Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.
