Jean-Antoine de Baïf - Les ieux - 1572-1573

RARE FIRST EDITION by JEAN-ANTOINE DE BAÏF "LES JEUX" printed in PARIS 1572. Early genuine first edition of one of the most important French poets and writers of the Renaissance. This book includes the following works: - XIX Eclogues (Poems inspired by Ovid and Ariosto) - Tragédie Antigone (Sophocles play) - Comédie Le Brave (Plautus comedy) - Comedie L'Eunuque (Terence comedy) - IX Devis des dieux pris de Lucian Author: Jean-Antoine de Baïf (1532–1589) was a French poet and member of the Pléiade, a group of 16th-century French poets whose principal members were Pierre de Ronsard, Joachim du Bellay and Jean-Antoine de Baïf. Baïf was born in Venice, the natural son of the scholar Lazare de Baïf (1496–1547), who was at that time French ambassador at Venice. As most often, the printing date of 1572 was changed to 1573 by the addition of a final "I" (as seen in the photos). Description: In-8 (162 x 113 mm), 4 ff., 232 pp. A fine copy in modern brown morocco, spine with 5 nerves, title and gilt panels on spine.
