Baïf was born in Venice, the natural son of the scholar Lazare de Baïf (1496–1547), who was at that time French ambassador at Venice. Thanks, perhaps, to the surroundings of his childhood, he grew up an enthusiast for the fine arts, and surpassed in zeal all the leaders of the Renaissance in France. Title: Les Ieux de Ian Antoine de Baif. A Monseigneur le Duc d'Alencon (François de France 1554–1584). Published by Lucas Breyer, in Paris MDLXXIII or 1573 [i.e. 1572]. As most often, the printing date of 1572 was changed to 1573 by the addition of a final "I" (as seen in the photos).
