Henry St John Bolingbroke - The Works of Henry St John Bolingbroke - 1754

Five volumes. First edition 1754. Bookplate from the Library of Baronet Joseph Neeld. A heavy set to ship. Large format volumes. Contemporary mottled calf. Morocco gilt titles and gilt decorative panels. 5 gilt raised bands. Triple colour page-blocks. Volume I. [2], 563 pages. Volume II. [3], 527 pages. Volume III. [2], 561 pages. Volume IV. [2], 632 pages. Volume V. [1], 567 pages. Henry St John Bolingbroke was a prominent Tory politician and philosopher who became a major political propagandist in opposition to the Whig Party led by Sir Robert Walpole. "In the late 20th century, Bolingbroke was rediscovered by historians as a major on Voltaire, and on the American patriots John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. Adams said that he had read all of Bolingbroke s works at least five times; indeed, Bolinbroke's works were widely read in the American colonies, where they helped provide the foundation for the emerging nations devotion to republicanism. His vision of history as cycles of birth, growth, decline and death of republic was influential in the colonies, as was his contention on liberty; that one is "free not from the law, but by the law." Shipped and insured [courier liability] with DHL Express. N.B. Remote Areas and Island Destinations incur an additional shipping costs of €19.50 levied by the Courier company.
