Thomas Gibson - The Anatomy of Humane Bodies Epitomized - 1684

The anatomy of humane bodies epitomized. Wherein all parts of man's body, with their actions and uses, are succinctly described, according to the newest doctrine of the most accurate and learned modern anatomists. The second edition, corrected and inlarged both in the discourse and figures. By Tho. Gibson, M.D. and fellow of the College of Physicians, London. Octavo: 15, 590 pages. First published anonymously in 1682, The Anatomy of Human Bodies Epitomiz'd was probably the most successful English anatomical textbook published to date. The first edition had only three plates as compared to the 16 here. It was ultimately issued in eight editions. Gibson, the Physician-General to the English army, based his comprehensive text on Alexander Read's Manual of Anatomy. However, the content was so extensively revised and supplemented Gibson claimed authorship. Gibson listed his principal sources (some 33 titles by 27 authors) which was an uncommon practice at the time. The book relies “heavily upon Spiegel, Diemerbroeck, Thomas and Caspar Bartholin, Charleton, Glisson, Lower, Willis, Harvey, Malpighi, Warton, Stenson, de Graaf, and other well-known anatomists” (Heirs of Hippocrates 431; the 1684 ed). There are several sections on sex, reproduction and childbirth. Uncommon to find this, the second edition, complete and in such great condition. The binding is contemporary. Front joint cracking and some wear to the top of spine. Plate XII is loose. That aside, a lovely copy. With all sixteen plates, and appendix and Publisher's Catalogue at the end.
