The Auto Union 12 cylinder (Type D) was eventually ready to match the Mercedes race cars. At the Grand Prix of France that took place on July 9, 1939, it was put to another test of strengths. Mercedes had brought 3 cars to the track, driven by Caracciola, Lang and von Brauchitsch respectively, Auto Untion started with 4 cars, driven by Nuvolari, Stuck, H.P. Müller and Georg "Schorsch" Meier, a replacement driver who stepped in on a short notice. He subsitituted for Hasse, the driver who felt out of sort. While the race ended with a true triumph for the Auto Union, it spelled "disaster" for Mercedes. All of its three cars did not finish the race. With startin number12, H.P. Müller drove to 1st place and set a new track record of 2 hours 21 minutes and 11 seconds, as well. This means an average of 169.38 km/h. It was the first Grand Prix victory in his career. His new teammate "Schorsch" Meier, who was a very famous motorbike race driver, won a highly aclaimed second place. This second place would mean even more it one knows how it was achieved. In lap 23, Meier had to come in for a pit stop. Spilled gas, however, caused immediate combustion, and Meier had to continue the race with light burns. Georg "Schorsch" Meier finished second with starting number 14 (M-090), thus securing a dual victory for the trademark The Four Rings. This double victory was a perfect payback to Mercedes by Auto Union for the defeat of the previous year. CMC recreated both cars as limited editions, each with 1,500 pieces worldwide.
