Icono - Madre de Dios de la Zarza Ardiente - Madera

Russia, egg tempera on chalk ground, painted on wooden panel. Following the traditional canons of the Russian Sacred Art from the 19th Century. Beautiful and mystical depiction in lively colors of a classic representation in the Russian Orthodox Sacred Art. It has somewhat “hard to explain” divine aura with a golden glow which makes it very special. A rare collector item. (Byzantium and Early Russia) Very conservative in painting style, of a type of image that was first developed in Russia in the late 16th century. It is primarily based on the Old Testament story in which God revealed himself to Moses in a bush that burned without being consumed by the fire. The Burning Bush was used as a metaphor for the Virgin Mary, who gave birth to a child while retaining her virginity. The Virgin and Christ Child in the center of the panel are surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists and by angels whom Mary, as the Queen of Heaven, commands. These angels hold sway over various natural elements: wind, fire, ice, darkness, etc. (cf. Hebrews 1:7). This makes this unique icon rich in history and iconography and it has somewhat “hard to explain” divine aura. A rare collector item. Measurements 25x17 cm. Condition: In good condition, painting shows signs of craquelure as expected. Scractches present and chips on the edges. Sign of a burning candle mark on the top left. Professionally packed and shipped with upmost care. This increases the shipping cost slightly but it reassures that it arrives without damages.
