Suzuki Kazuaki established his Ichii Ittobori workshop in Kokubunji during the Showa 20s. He is dedicated to the traditional Ichii Ittobori, a woodcarving technique originating from the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture. This method specifically utilizes Yew trees, carefully selected at the impressive age of 400 to 500 years, to celebrate their natural wood grain through masterful carving, without the addition of color. This Hannya mask, a staple in Noh theater, symbolizes a woman's wrath and jealousy, her spirit morphed into a demon. The dual nature of this character is depicted through sorrowful eyes and an enraged mouth, representing the transformation caused by extreme emotions. This mask is not just a representation of a feared demoness but an artifact that reveals the depths of human feelings and the complexities involved in their expression. Suzuki's artistry is immortalized in this piece, with "32nd year, auspicious day in October" carved on the back of the mask, while the inner lid of the accompanying original wooden box and the fabric bear his distinct signature seal. The condition of the mask is remarkable, presenting no scratches and minimum signs of handling. The detailed condition can be appreciated in the provided photographs. Dimension of Mask: approx.
