ABOUT THE ARTIST: New York City based and Brazilian born artist PIXOTE, is an outstanding street artist. Moslty known for his graffiti art, but also recognized for his paintings. His style roots in the Brazilian pixação, where his goal to spread positivity, awareness and love throughout his work comes from.PIXOTE moved to the States in the mid 90’s, where he got inspired by the Lower East Side music, skateboarding, and the global graffiti scene. The urban scene in Brazil talks about culture, music, festivals, cuisine, beauty, faith and hope. It represents native indigenous peoples, the Northeastern life, as well as representing the history of blacks in Brazil. Experiencing new Western aesthetics allowed PIXOTE to build up on and to define further his personal signature. Blending togteher and refining a balanced mix of pixação and NYC style, and expressing it on the walls of the Big Apple. His aestetics evolved in a mixture of many things but lines remain the main construction and structure of his works. With color he explores many earthy and reddish tones in contrast to pure primary colors, and compositions with more presence of black and white. Together with the TWD (The Warrior Dream) crew, PIXOTE highly contributed to NYC’s graffiti culture. Not only with their mural artworks, but also with their installations, drawings and posters. PIXOTE’s work were featured at the opening of URBAN NATION Museum (Berlin) in 2017, and have since been seen around the world. He currently focuses on lino-cut and engraving techniques that have have been drawing attention across numerous galleries. His art talks of the rights of indigenous peoples, their persecution throughout history and the demarcation of their land. ABOUT THE ARTWORK: URIHI means 'land' (specifically, 'forest-land') in the language of the Yanomami, one of the last ethnic groups in the Brazilian Amazon. To them, Urihi is not a mere inert space for economic exploration (of what we call 'nature'). It is a living entity, part of a complex cosmological dynamic of exchanges between humans and non-humans. As such, it finds itself today threatened by reckless predation around mining and expanding farmland, intensifying since the 70s and 80s. Indigenous people in Brazil struggle to be heard, and their ancestral knowledge and wisdom recognized in a country, and more generally a world, where capitalism sees any common resources as an opportunity to make profits, regardless of who was there and its impact on ecosystems. Beyond these resource appropriations, indigenous people have had to face violence and stand as one of the last resistances to extractivism. Standing to see their land rights on ancestral lands recognized, they are mostly fighting for their lives, with some of their leaders still being assassinated in Brazilia in the late 90s. PIXOTE focuses on emanating the essence of Urihi and making it palpable to the viewer. It results in a luminous and inspired portrait that sits at the antipodes of that violence. More like the figure of a saint connected through the holy trinity of soil, light, and air, Urihi reconnects us to the immense wisdom, peacefulness, and permanence of our world and nature. Night does not exist without the day, and life emerges from the sun. The bottom of the image is lined in red, making us wonder if it is in reference to the violence the Yanomami have been subjected to or if it signifies the land being cut open for mining purposes. Yet, the colors remain bright, bold, and simple, infused by life. Altogether, the composition invites us to join the subject in his deep meditation and connect to the greater universe wherever we are.
