Byars studied art, psychology and philosophy in his birthplace. In the late 1950s he moved to Kioto in Japan. In the 1970s he gained particular recognition in Europe for his performances, objects, sculptures and installations.

In 1974 he was a guest at the studio of the Deutsche Akademische Austausch Dienst (DAAD) in Berlin, where he conceived the Golden Tower (Golden Tower) which he exhibited in different versions and at several locations, such as at documenta 7 (1982) in Kassel. Other documentas in which he participated were documenta 5 (in 1972) and documenta 8 (in 1987).

In 1994 he received the first Wolfgang-Hahn-Preis as Magier der Stille. The Museum Ludwig in Cologne donated to him for that The Perfect Smile, which is considered the first immaterial artwork in a museum.
