Ceramic, large W Germany vase, designed by Carstens Tönnieshof, glazed - 45 cm

An extraordinary nice and large W Germany earthenware lava floor vase made by Carstens Tönnieshof. 45 cm in size. The brown metallic of bronze glazed sections are decorated with a graphical, gratinated pattern. Between them are the coffee coloured sections which provide a striking contrast. The number ‘7914-45’ is on the base of the vase in relief and Carstens’ logo is on the bottom and has been included in the casting (two houses included in the firing with a ‘T’ and a ‘C’ below, photo 3). Will be sent by registered mail. Tönnieshof (1945-1984) was an important factory, owned by the Carstens family. Carstens is renowned for its high quality pieces. Dimensions: It has a height of 45 cm (17.7 inches) and a bottom diameter of 22 cm. The neck is 14 cm. It weighs 3.8 kilograms. In excellent condition. The vase has a small spot where a chip is missing from the glaze. I almost missed it, though I tried to make an as clear as possible photo (photo 6). If you don’t know about it, you will not see it. Information about the makers/factory: Christian Hinrich Carstens bought the wholesale business Carstens & Stahl on 30 April 1878. Christian Carstens (†1929) and his brother Ernst Carstens (†1925) acquired a ceramic company in Rheinsberg (Brandenburg) in 1892. The company had many sites, though WW II caused the company to break up. After losing their ceramic and porcelain factories on Eastern German territory (Carstens Uffrecht) in 1945 (expropriated and transferred into a state-owned company), Ernst Carstens (son of Christian) and his son Christian, found the company Carstens Tonnieshof. Carstens Uffrecht became the Eastern German vase manufacturer VEB Haldensleben in 1945. The west German firm Carstens was domiciled in Fredelsloh (Niedersachsen) and started production in the spring of 1947.
