M16/M17 German Helmet. The M16 German Helmet or Stahlhelm was the first production model and was developed by Hauptmann Friedrich Schwerd. The earlier leather helmets proved ineffective in stopping shrapnel The M16 helmet was issued to the 1st Assault Battalion, in December 1915. It was introduced for regular service in the Verdun campaign, early 1916.  P.s. There are two bullet holes in the helmet and a dent from the ricochet.
