Iittala - Tapio Wirkkala - Carafe - "Ultima Thule" - Crystal

The Ultima Thule line is an Iittala classic. This collection was inspired by the melting ice in Lapland. Design reflects thousands of hours spent perfecting the glass-blowing technique required to produce that effect. Patterns gradually change as the glass burns the surface of the wooden moulds. Ultima Thule means “outside the borders of the known world”, and these piece is definitely out of this world! You will never see anything else quite like this magnificent handmade carafe. A versatile genius synonymous with Finnish design, Tapio Wirkkala’s contributions to the world of functional art includes everything from elegant glassware to the design of banknotes. During his world-renowned career, Wirkkala earned a vast array of awards, including three gold medals at the Triennale in Milan in 1951 and another three in 1954. From clear crystal glass in ice shapes. Solid, stands at 3 small legs. Very decorative, with magic presence in the room space. Stunning optical effects in different light sources. Perfect and emblematic example of Finnish mid century glass design. In excellent vintage condition, no chips and cracks, no repairs. Minimal traces of time and use. Some small imperfections inside the glass as result of hand made way of production. Approximately dimensions - Height: 22 cm. Width: ca. 12.5 cm. Weight: 692 g. All information provided to the best of my knowledge and belief. Pictures are part of the description. This lot will be carefully packaged and sent by registered mail.
