Henry J. Pearson - Beyond Petsora Eastward - 1899

First Edition. A detailed account of the ornithology - together with aspects of botany and geology - of northern Norway and “Russian” Lapland, described as a “Russian Province of the North.” The work forms part of the nineteenth-century tradition of scientific travel literature and records an 1895 expedition undertaken by the naturalist Henry J. Pearson and Colonel Henry Wemyss Feilden to study Arctic bird life and the natural environment of the region. The narrative draws on Pearson’s diary of the voyage, describing ornithological observations and the practical realities of Arctic travel, including whaling activity, the condition of their vessel, and the difficulties of working in a remote and inhospitable landscape. Feilden contributes three technical papers on geology and botany, illustrated with his own photographs. Front free endpaper partially detached; rubbing to spine; foxing to fore edge. xiv, 335 pp., 2 folding maps
