Walking stick (2) - Wood, Brass, Cord - ca. 1880–1920

A charming pair of antique walking sticks dating to the late Victorian to early 20th century period (circa 1880–1920), each displaying distinct character and traditional craftsmanship. The first stick (approx. 90 cm) features a solid brass ball handle mounted on a naturally formed wooden shaft. The simple spherical head is highly characteristic of the late Victorian era, while the cord binding at the neck reflects a practical solution often seen in working or rural sticks of the turn of the century. The wood retains its organic form with visible knots and grain, giving it a strong rustic appeal. The second stick (approx. 85 cm) is a classic crook-handled example, carved from a single piece of wood and shaped to follow the natural curve of the branch. This traditional “shepherd’s crook” form was valued for its practicality and comfortable grip. The wood has been carefully worked to preserve its natural grain and subtle undulations, giving the piece a sculptural, organic quality. Visible knots, tonal variations, and flowing lines in the grain enhance its individuality, while the warm, honeyed patina developed over time emphasises its age and authenticity. Unlike mass-produced examples, this stick retains a distinctly hand-finished character, with gentle asymmetry and small irregularities that reflect traditional craftsmanship. Both sticks display beautiful natural grain and honest age wear, making them highly decorative as well as functional collectibles. Good antique condition overall. Surface wear, marks, and patina consistent with age. The brass handle shows an attractive aged patina. The binding has age-related wear. The crook-handled cane shows surface wear and a natural longitudinal crack in the shaft – stable but visible. Structurally sound overall, best suited for display or light use.
