Firdowsi - Shahnameh Manuscript - 1760

A single manuscript page written in Persian nasta’liq script, dating back to the 18th Century from Ferdowsi's Shahnameh (Book of Kings). The Shahnameh is an epic Persian poem by Ferdowsi detailing the history and mythology of Iran from the creation of the world to the Arab conquest in the 7th century. Comprising around 50,000 verses, the poem chronicles the mythical and historical reigns of Persian kings, their heroic deeds, and their conflicts with demons and evil forces. It is a foundational work of Persian literature, equivalent to Shakespeare's works in English culture, vital for preserving Iranian cultural identity and national spirit. The poet Ferdowsi dedicated his life to this monumental work, aiming to record ancient Persian history and lore before it was lost after the Arab conquests. The page is plain text, divided into 4 columns of 25 lines of script in fine nasta'liq black ink, separated by a decorative floral column. A single decorative central cartouche reads, "Azan pas bars va Jangik va Nameh" - marking a sectional heading. The page describes heroic battles, the sorrow of warriors, themes of fate and loyalty, lamentation over fallen heroes and the glory and tragedy of war - hallmarks of Shahnameh's narrative style. The gold has retained its lustre exceptionally well. The whole page is bordered by thick gold framing. Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing. Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.
