Giovanni Contardi - Rubik's Cube Mosaic - Inquisitor

Artist: Giovanni Contardi Title: Inquisitor Year: 2026 Medium: Rubik’s Cube mosaic (wall sculpture) Materials: 64 original Rubik’s Cubes, MDF panel, archival industrial adhesive Dimensions: 45.8 × 45.8 × 7.8 cm Edition: Unique work Inquisitor presents a fragmented face emerging from a structured field of blue and white modules. The image appears suspended between presence and absence. The composition is constructed through a strict rule-based system, where each Rubik’s Cube functions simultaneously as pixel and object. The limited palette reinforces a sense of control and restraint, while subtle irregularities inherent to the material introduce slight variations across the surface. The background is reduced to a sequence of vertical bands, where intermittent yellow elements introduce a secondary rhythm within the structure. Color is intentionally suppressed on the frontal plane. The full chromatic identity of the Rubik’s Cube remains visible only along the sides of the work, revealing the object behind the image and reinforcing the dual nature of the piece, both image and structure. The result is a controlled, ambiguous presence: a face that seems to observe, question, or simply remain, unresolved. Unique piece. Hand-signed on the reverse. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity with archival hologram. The work is ready to hang and fitted with a concealed French cleat mounting system. It will be professionally packed and shipped. Giovanni Contardi is an Italian artist internationally recognised for his mosaics created entirely from original Rubik’s Cubes. His work transforms one of the most iconic objects of the 20th century into a contemporary artistic medium defined by a distinctive, recognisable visual language. His relationship with the Rubik’s Cube began in 2009 through competitive speedcubing, where he developed a high level of technical mastery. In 2013, he began translating this expertise into Rubik’s Cube mosaics, and by 2018 this exploration had evolved into a full-time artistic practice, gaining international attention across the fields of contemporary art, design, and pop culture. Selected Installations and Recognition: His installations are permanently exhibited at the Disney Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel (Disneyland Paris) and at the Rossini National Museum in Italy. His contribution to the development of “Rubik Cubism” has been recognised internationally, including a mention by Ernő Rubik, inventor of the Rubik’s Cube, in his autobiographical book Cubed: The Puzzle of Us All (2020). Selected works, installations, and process documentation are shared on Instagram under the name JVENB.
