This mask is associated with Onikenbai, a traditional performing art from Iwate Prefecture. In this ritual dance, performers wear demon masks believed to possess protective and apotropaic power, combining fearsome presence with a role in warding off evil. The mask is hand-carved from a single block of solid wood, showing confident craftsmanship throughout. A particularly distinctive feature is the use of brass inlay in the eyes, which catches and reflects light, intensifying the gaze and enhancing its dramatic presence. The surface is finished with a gofun (crushed oyster shell pigment) ground, giving the face its soft white tone. Boldly stylized black eyebrows and facial hair, together with red accents around the mouth, create a striking visual contrast and emphasize the mask’s strong, theatrical expression. The reverse bears a branded mark “榮” (Sakae), likely indicating the maker or workshop. A cord is attached for wearing or display. Condition is fair to good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use. There are stains, dirt, and surface wear throughout, as well as natural patination and dulling to the brass elements.
