This type of mask is used in the sacred performance of Okina, one of the oldest and most ritualistic forms of Japanese Noh theatre, where the Kyogen actor performs the Sanbaso dance. The role is highly auspicious and associated with prayers for prosperity, longevity, peace, and abundant harvests. The mask displays a deep black lacquer finish with strongly carved wrinkles, expressing a dignified yet lively character. The eyebrows, moustache, and beard are made from implanted animal hair, likely horsehair, giving a natural and dynamic appearance. A distinctive feature is the articulated construction of the lower jaw, which is separately carved and attached with cord. This allows movement during performance and produces a characteristic sound. The interior reveals clear hand-carving with visible chisel marks, emphasizing traditional craftsmanship. It is inscribed with the name of the mask, the date August 1994, and the artist’s signature Motoyasu (基安). The mask is accompanied by an elegant brocade storage bag decorated with woven fan and floral motifs. A cloth label attached to the bag indicates a previous owner’s name. This piece is both an authentic theatrical mask and a highly decorative object, suitable for collectors of Japanese traditional arts or as an interior display. The condition is good vintage, showing signs of age and use. There are minor surface scuffs, some lacquer wear, and slight discoloration. The storage bag shows light staining. Please refer to the photographs for full condition details. Dimensions: approx.
