Attributed to Kimbei Kusakabe AGE: c. 1880s PROCESS: hand-colored albumen print, mounted DIMENSIONS: 20.2 x 26.2 cm (actual image only) ; mount measure 25.8 x 33.9 cm CONDITION: mounts show wear and a few tears, and are slightly warped, exactly as illustrated in the scans. Kusakabe Kimbei worked with Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried as a photographic colourist and assistant. In 1881, Kimbei opened his own workshop in Yokohama, in the Benten-dōri quarter. From 1889, the studio operated in the Honmachi quarter. By 1893, his was one of the leading Japanese studios supplying art to Western customers.
