Antique Chinese chest or dekenkist (bedding chest), characterized by deep reddish-brown or black lacquer and traditional brass fittings. These types of chests often date from the late 19th or early 20th century and were originally used to store clothes or bedding. Characteristics and Types Material: Typically made of hardwood such as camphor wood, elm, or pine. Camphor wood was particularly popular for its insect-repellent properties. Fittings: The ornate, circular or butterfly-shaped metal lock on the front of the chest and the handles on either side are hallmarks of the classical Chinese style. Uses: Today, these pieces are often used as coffee tables, end-of-bed storage, or decorative accents. It is in very good condition, there are scratches on the bottom but we don't actually use it.
