Ancient Chinese, Tang Dynasty Ceramic 馬と騎手 - 15 cm

Description: A Tang Dynasty red pottery equestrian figure, robustly sculpted with simple details on the rider. The clay is reddish-brown, retaining traces of red and white pigments, and showing signs of natural burial crusting and weathering, giving it a rustic charm. Such red pottery figures were commonly used as funerary objects in the Tang Dynasty, highly valued for their simplicity. They differ significantly from the more exquisite Tang Dynasty sancai (three-color glazed pottery) horses: red pottery figures had mineral pigments painted directly onto the clay surface, easily peeling off over time; while sancai horses were glazed with brightly colored lead glaze and used in higher-ranking tombs. This piece, retaining traces of pigments and natural soil deposits, is a representative example of authentic Tang Dynasty funerary pottery. The horse's legs are missing; the rider's body was broken and reattached. The extent of the damage is determined based on the image. Catawiki disclaimer: This object has been dated based on style by the seller . No further tests, such as, a TL test, lapidary tests, analysis of pigments or radiography scans have been conducted to check the integrity of the piece.
