A joyful, densely layered horizontal composition built entirely from many small, rounded brushstrokes placed side by side across the whole canvas. Each mark is its own fragment, a little tile of colour in magenta, hot pink, blush, orange, red, yellow, grey, and white, and together they vibrate with warmth and energy. Toward the centre, darker passages of black and deep burnt sienna open up between the bright yellow marks, creating a sense of depth, as though something glows from within. The overall effect is mosaic-like, somewhere between ancient fresco and pure contemporary abstraction. Up close, each stroke stands alone. From a distance, they merge into something whole. I lost myself in this one in the best possible way. It started as one mark, then another, and I could not stop. There is something almost meditative about repeating the same gesture so many times while still letting each one be slightly different. It made me think about how we are all made up of fragments, pieces of memory, of people, of places, and how together they form something that is entirely our own. Sonia Anton is a Romanian-Australian artist whose passion for painting was shaped from an early age, growing up alongside her mother, a celebrated artist whose work left a lasting impression.
