イコン - 正教会の聖像「イエスの最初の一歩」 - Wood
This is the extremely rare Orthodox icon "The First Steps of Jesus Christ" (Greek: Τα πρώτη πέτημα του Χριστού).
Main characteristics and symbolism: Rare plot: The original image dates back to the end of the 16th - the first half of the 17th century. It is kept in the monastery "Limonos" on the Greek island of Lesbos. The plot is considered unique in the entire Christian world, since a similar event is not described in the canonical Gospels. In all likelihood, the composition was inspired by analogy with the apocryphal Gospel of James, which mentions the first seven steps of the little Virgin Mary.
Iconography: On the left side, the Holy Virgin is depicted in full height, slightly leaning forward and with her arms outstretched. The little Jesus Christ (depicted at the age of about 2–3 years) approaches her, taking his first timid steps and stretching out his arms towards his mother.
Artistic style: The scene unfolds on a traditional Cretan school golden background with a specific rocky landscape in the background. The inscriptions at the top in Greek read "ΤΑ ΠΡΟΤΑ ΒΗΜΑΤΑ ΤΟΥ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥ" (The First Steps of Christ). This icon symbolizes the vulnerability of human nature that the Savior assumed at His Incarnation, as well as the deep maternal tenderness and protection of the Most Holy Theotokos.
