希少な牙の仮面 - Gabon (No reserve price)

This rare and enigmatic piece is a traditional Fang mask, originating from the Fang people who inhabit the dense equatorial rainforests spanning southern Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and northern Gabon. Within Fang spiritual and social frameworks, masks are traditionally linked to secret initiatory societies such as the Ngil (a judicial, anti-witchcraft association) and the So (a hunting and ancestral society). While the canonical Fang Ngil masks are famous for their heavily elongated, pure white heart-shaped faces, this specific archetype represents a far more unusual, robust regional variation that bridges ancestral veneration with protective warrior traits. Worn by high-ranking initiates during major social crises, judicial tribunals, or solemn funerary rites for elder lineage leaders, the mask was designed to manifest an imposing, otherworldly entity capable of exposing wrongdoers, neutralizing malevolent sorcery, and re-establishing customary law and social equilibrium. The physical architecture of this mask perfectly exemplifies the bold, geometric minimalism and mixed-media mastery unique to the Fang sculptural tradition. The face is dominated by a heavy, high-domed forehead split by a dark central vertical ridge that acts as a strong symmetry axis, meticulously outlined with a continuous row of brass upholstery tacks—prestige trade elements used to map out facial contours and capture light during kinetic movement. The lower eye region and cheeks are covered in a thick, cracked layer of white kaolin clay (bimba), which symbolizes the pure, vigilant spirit world and the presence of the ancestors. Breaking away from standard portraiture, the carver rendered the eyes as sharp, inverted triangular cutouts that project a stern, piercing gaze, framed by a dark, blocky nose ridge and an integrated T-shaped brow. The entire composition is masterfully crowned with a singular, horn-like wooden spike at the apex and balanced below by a dense, shaggy beard of natural plant fiber and twisted cordage, giving the piece a powerful tactile texture that frames its serene yet formidable geometric silhouette.
