Daalderop Art Deco Pewter Table Jug, Amsterdam School Spirit, Netherlands, c. 1920s–1930s
A cute small pewter table jug by J.N. Daalderop & Zn., Tiel, made in the Netherlands during the interwar period, circa 1920s–1930s. Marked underneath with Daalderop stamp.
This elegant lidded jug, or klepkannetje, has a sharply conical body, a hinged pointed lid, a curved handle and a small pouring spout. The lower body is decorated with vertical stepped relief elements, giving the piece architectural rhythm and Amsterdam School spirit.
The jug was most likely intended as a small serving jug for the table, suitable for liquids.
Stylistically, the piece belongs firmly to the Dutch Art Deco period and designed in the spirit of the Amsterdam School. The expressive silhouette, pointed lid, dark pewter surface and zigzag relief decoration all carry that slightly fantastical, architectural quality found in the Dutch decorative arts of the 1920s. It is functional, but with a theatrical edge: a small household object turned into a tiny piece of design architecture.
Condition
A dent on one side. Otherwise good antique condition with age-related wear and patina. The pewter has a naturally softened surface with small marks and signs of use consistent with age. The hinged lid opens and closes. A decorative and collectable Dutch interwar design object.
