ライトファイティング・シールド Kombai Asmat - salawaku - 西パプア

Kombai Shield – Field Collected, 1995 I field collected this wooden shield from the Kombai people in 1995. It was used both in combat and in ceremonial dance rituals in the forest. The design is highly abstract, yet the painted and carved motifs function as a visual language, conveying meaning understood within the community. This symbolic quality gives the piece a strong presence beyond its formal simplicity. The shield is notably light in weight, made for mobility in both fighting and dance. Examples of this type are rare, particularly with clear provenance from field collection. A compelling and authentic object that reflects the cultural traditions of the Kombai people. We pack securely sending worldwide Alongside my passion for these unique cultural objects, I recently published my book ‘Ik droomde dat je kwam ‘ in which I describe personal encounters and experiences in Papua.
