“Palais Royal” Desk Set (19th Century) A French antique piece of exceptional rarity, made during the Napoleon III period (ca. 1860–1880) for the luxury shops in the galleries of the Palais Royal complex in Paris. The object is a decorative desk set (nécessaire de bureau), with an allegorical and rustic theme of impeccable technical execution. Main Figurines: Two he-goats (male goats) detailed modeled in solid silver, finished with a fine historical patina. The animals wear bells around their necks and are harnessed to a carriage by fine reins made of twisted gilt bronze wire. Carriage and Structure: Made entirely of gilt bronze (ormolu), decorated with filigree elements, floral motifs and miniature wheels cast with remarkable geometric precision. A central inkwell in blue opaline glass (Bleu Céleste shade), hand-polished into octagonal facets, protected by a hinged dome-shaped lid. A ruby-colored crystal perfume bottle, hand-engraved and enameled with gold leaf star motifs, placed in the filigree stand at the back of the carriage. The bottle stopper is blocked and the top is missing! Base: The entire scene is mounted on a massive, rectangular plinth of natural alabaster with warm veins, mechanically fixed to the back by original brass rods and clips. Due to the age of the object and the considerable weight of the alabaster plinth, it is strictly forbidden to lift the piece by gripping the carriage, the wheels or the silver figurines. Mechanical bonds and fixing rods over 150 years old can fail under the weight of the stone.
