Gandhara Stucco 坐像菩薩 - 紀元後4世紀末〜5世紀

A Rare Gandhara Stucco Seated Bodhisattva, 4th-5th Century AD H12.5×W8×D6 cm Finely modelled in stucco, the bodhisattva is shown seated with the body slightly turned and one arm resting across the lap. The face is softly rendered with elongated features, almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, and gently defined lips, framed by wavy hair gathered around the head. Unlike many surviving Gandharan stucco examples, which are often preserved only as heads, hands, feet, or partial body fragments, this example is rare in retaining the figure as a complete seated form. The sculpture preserves a strong sense of presence, with the facial expression, upper body, seated posture, and integral base remaining visually coherent. The surface displays a pale earthen tone with traces of white slip or encrustation, together with soil deposits and natural age-related accretions. Despite the expected wear to the modelling, the figure retains an expressive and contemplative quality characteristic of Gandharan Buddhist stucco sculpture. A similar style example from the same period in the collection of the British Museum, registration no. 1957,0729.2: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/A_1957-0729-2 Provenance: Acquired from a private collection in 1982, Paris Condition: The figure is preserved as a rare largely complete seated stucco figure, with condition consistent with age, material, and long-term burial or archaeological surface exposure. The head and neck had been broken and reattached, with reinforcement using adhesive. There is partial loss to the back of the neck. The surface shows abrasion, wear, and weathering caused by age. Expected chips, small losses, and irregularities are present along the edges, extremities, base, and projecting areas. The overall surface is covered with soil, accretions, and age-related deposits. Further minor surface losses, cracks, pitting, and encrustation are visible throughout. Please refer carefully to the photographs for full condition details. Shipping worldwide by EMS, usually 7-14 days to deliver. Authenticity Guarantee This item is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity.
