Blue and White Porcelain Dish (Ko-sometsuke Type) China, late Ming dynasty, Wanli to Tianqi period (circa 1573–1627) A small blue and white porcelain dish from the late Ming dynasty, produced for the Japanese market and commonly referred to as Ko-sometsuke ware. The dish is decorated with a central floral motif set within a garden scene, painted in a lively and spontaneous manner characteristic of the Transitional period. The brushwork displays a free and expressive quality, reflecting the changing aesthetics of late Ming export porcelain. The underglaze cobalt blue varies from deep tones to softer washes on a slightly greyish-white body, typical of wares produced for export to Japan. Minor imperfections, including rim fritting, are consistent with this type of porcelain and contribute to its authentic character.
