Roberto Matta (1911-2002) - Personnages en Echaurren
Roberto Matta’s Personnages en Echaurren (1967) is an important and highly collectible example of the artist’s mature Surrealist graphic work from the 1960s. Executed as an original six-color etching, the composition demonstrates Matta’s distinctive visual language through fluid spatial structures, metamorphic figures, and psychologically charged imagery suspended between the cosmic, mechanical, and subconscious realms.
This impression is numbered 51 from a rare limited edition of only 95 copies, printed on fine French handmade wove paper and bearing the embossed dry stamp of the renowned Zurich publisher L’Oeuvre Gravée in the margin. The exceptionally small edition size, combined with the quality of its production and preservation, makes this work particularly desirable among collectors of important modern master prints.
The title references the artist’s full name — Roberto Sebastián Antonio Matta Echaurren — adding a personal and symbolic dimension to the composition. Created during one of the most significant periods of Matta’s career, the work reflects his exploration of “psychological space,” a concept that helped establish him as one of the leading figures of twentieth-century Surrealism.
Born in Santiago, Chile, Roberto Matta (1911–2002) was closely associated with major Surrealist figures including André Breton, Salvador Dalí, and Max Ernst, and later played a significant role in influencing the development of American Abstract Expressionism. Today, his works are held in the collections of major international museums including Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou, and Tate Modern, securing his place as one of the most influential artists of modern Surrealism.
