ビザンティン・サインetリング – ビザンティン帝国 – 西暦6世紀〜10世紀
錬鉄のブロンズ製サインetリング。高く盛り上がった円形ベゼルの中に、 dark glass または vitreous のインlay を配したデザイン。こうしたタイプの指輪はビザンティン世界全域で個人の装飾品および地位の象徴として着用され、色付きガラス、半貴石、または彫刻されたインサートを取り入れることが多かった。ブロンズ本体と濃いインセットの対比は、身につけると元々は華やかな視覚効果を生んだ。
指輪は幅広く先細りするホープを特徴とする、前面に目立つベゼルを支持するデザインを示しており、ビザンティン時代の個人用宝飾品の特徴的な形態である。年齢に伴う摩耗、鉱物の沈着、表面のこびりつきが全体に見られ、装飾の周囲には緑色の酸化物の痕跡が残っている。現存するガラスのインサートは視覚的な魅力を大いに高め、ビザンティン時代の宝飾品伝統における装飾石・ガラスのセットが引き続き用いられていたことを示している。
