イスラム世界の印章リング — 10世紀から13世紀AD
オーバル状のベゼルに、交差する線状モチーフから成る抽象的幾何組成を刻んだ、鋳造のブロンズ製印章リング。中世のイスラム世界ではこの種のリングが個人の印章、行政上の道具、社会的地位の象徴として広く用いられてきました。刻まれた face は元々ワックス、粘土、その他の柔らかい材料へ押し付けて文書や通信、財産を認証するために使用されていたであろうものです。
リングは、広いベゼルと肩が細く徐々に円形の輪へと流れる、中世イスラムの特徴的な形を示しています。何世紀にもわたる使用によって刻まれたデザインの一部が滑らかになり、表面を覆う暗褐色からオリーブ色の patina が歴史的な風合いを際立たせています。機能的な職人技と装飾的な彫刻の組み合わせが、中世イスラムの個人装身具・印章制作の伝統を示す魅力的な例となっています。
