Taíno Anthropomorphic Idol – Dominican Republic – 10th to 15th Century AD
Finely carved Taíno anthropomorphic idol sculpted from dark polished serpentine, displaying the distinctive stylized features associated with the ceremonial art of the Greater Antilles. The figure presents a large head with prominent circular eyes, a triangular nose, and a carefully rendered mouth, all executed in a highly geometric manner characteristic of Taíno lapidary traditions. The broad lateral projections framing the face likely represent ceremonial adornments or symbolic attributes connected with ancestral and spiritual beings.
The compact body is rendered with elegant simplicity, emphasizing symbolic expression over naturalistic representation. Incised linear motifs decorate the head, limbs, and lower body, while the smooth polished surface highlights the quality of the stone and the skill of the artisan. Small idols of this type were important ritual objects within Taíno society and reflect the sophisticated stone-carving traditions that flourished throughout the Caribbean before European contact.
