白兵器としての機能を超えて、「マムベリ」と呼ばれる短剣は名声の象徴であり、交換の通貨としても用いられた。多くは鞘なしで腰につけられていた；鞘付きのものは稀である。寸法は大きく変わるが（20〜90 cm）、柄のサイズは常に比較的小さい。
短剣「マムベリ」は、ボア族（アバブア、ボブワ）、アングバ族（モンゲリマを含む）、ハンガ族によって大量に生産された。近隣の多くの部族、特にバンディ族、ザンデ族、マンゲベトゥ族、ンザカラ族、バランボ族、ムバ族、ンダーカ族、バティ族、ビンジャ族、ベンゲ族などにも見られた。その人気と広範な普及は、隣接する多様な部族によって無数の地方変種を生み出すこととなった。
