Born in Tokyo, he was drawn to ceramics by his admiration of the avant-garde Mashiko master Kamoda Shōji, and in 1969 he established his own studio, Ichimoku-gama (一黙窯), in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture. Throughout his career he developed a highly personal vocabulary — robust, almost archaeological forms recalling ancient Chinese bronzes and clay haniwa figures, finished in deep, oxidised "old-bronze" surfaces. He was awarded the Grand Prize at the Northern Kantō Art Exhibition (1974), held a solo exhibition in Ginza, Tokyo (1975), and received the Tochigi Prefecture Marronier Craft Culture Award (1991). In 2022, the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art held a major retrospective, "Koinuma Michio and His Contemporaries," in his honour.
