写真はドライとウェット、両方のオパールで撮影したものです。明らかにウェット状態の方が明るく色彩豊かで、研磨後に得られる効果を際立たせます。オーストラリアの採掘慣行では、石の潜在能力を表すためにラフオパールをウェット状態で撮影するのが通例です。このため、入札前に写真を慎重にご評価ください。ご注意とご入札、ありがとうございます。

オパールは水分含有量が3〜21%の水和型シリカです。実際、この水分透過性がオパールを親水性にしています。
オパールは比較的低温で沈着し、ほぼあらゆる岩石の割れ目に発生する可能性があり、最も一般的には酸化鉄鉱（リノナイト）や砂岩、流紋岩、泥灰岩、玄武岩とともに見られます。貴重なオパールは内部色の変化のある相互作用を示します。
微視的尺度では、貴重なオパールは直径約150〜300nmのシリカ球が六方最密充填（六方最密）または立方最密の格子を成して構成されています。これらの規則正しいシリカ球が、オパールの微細構造を通過する光の干渉と回折を起こすことにより、内部色を生み出します。
