A Medieval Bronze Signet Ring with Foliate Motif, 13th - 15th Century A.D. Bronze signet ring with an oval bezel finely engraved with a detailed leaf or fern motif. The shoulders and hoop show incised linear and hatched decoration. The piece has a dark, attractive patina typical of excavated medieval bronzes. Rings of this type were used as personal seals for documents and letters, and the leaf motif may symbolize growth, nature or have heraldic/family significance. They were popular personal items across Central Europe during the later Middle Ages.
