Minolta A-2 serial 1326380, a fully mechanical 35mm rangefinder with the built-in Chiyoko Rokkor 4.5cm f/3.5 lens and Citizen MXV leaf shutter, no battery required and functioning.
Description from the seller
Minolta A-2 + Chiyoko Rokkor 4.5cm 1:3.5 — Classic 1950s Working 35mm Rangefinder, No Battery Required
A working Minolta A-2 — a beautifully made Japanese 35mm rangefinder camera from the mid-1950s, fitted with the highly regarded Chiyoko Rokkor (Tessar-derived 4-element) 4.5cm f/3.5 fixed lens and the renowned Citizen MXV leaf shutter. Manufactured by Chiyoda Kogaku (the company that later became Minolta) and introduced in 1955 as the successor to the original Minolta A, the A-2 added a faster top shutter speed of 1/500 s and improved finder optics. A true mechanical classic that requires NO BATTERY whatsoever and is ready to load with film and shoot today.
Including:
- Camera body (Minolta A-2)
- Fixed Chiyoko Rokkor 4.5cm 1:3.5 lens (built-in)
(No battery required — this camera is fully mechanical and has no electronic components)
Appearance:
Vintage cosmetic wear consistent with age (1950s camera). Some patina and small spots on the chrome top plate; leatherette body covering is intact with no peeling. The viewfinder and rangefinder windows are clear. No major dents or serious damage.
Function:
35mm coupled-rangefinder camera with Citizen MXV leaf shutter (B, 1 s – 1/500 s), bright viewfinder with separate rangefinder window, coupled rangefinder for accurate focusing, M/X flash synchronization with PC socket, and mechanical self-timer.
Confirmed during inspection:
- Shutter: fires correctly
- Film advance knob: operates
- Rewind crank: operates
Other features (shutter release, shutter speed ring, aperture ring f/3.5 – f/22, rangefinder coupling, self-timer, flash sync) are present on the camera. Please refer to the photos for the exact condition.
No battery is required for any function of this camera. The Minolta A-2 is a fully mechanical rangefinder with no light meter and no electronic components — a major advantage for vintage shooters who want to avoid hunting for discontinued battery types.
Optical system (lens):
Chiyoko Rokkor 4.5cm 1:3.5 — a four-element (Tessar-derived) lens made by Chiyoda Kogaku, widely praised for its sharpness and pleasing image rendering, considered one of the finest fixed-lens designs of its era. Please refer to the photos for the exact condition of the optics.
Shutter / film chamber:
The Citizen MXV leaf shutter blades appear clean. The film chamber and pressure plate are clean overall.
Notes:
The Minolta A series is historically significant as one of the early post-war Japanese coupled-rangefinder lines, and the A-2 represents a refined version of Chiyoda Kogaku's mid-1950s rangefinder design. A genuine 1950s mechanical Japanese rangefinder with a 4-element f/3.5 lens, ready to use without sourcing any specialized batteries. Please refer to the photos for the exact condition. As this is a 1950s camera, occasional servicing (CLA) is recommended for long-term reliable use.
